Popular Singapore TV host Pornsak Prajakwit‘s venture into the restaurant business has attracted both fans and curious onlookers alike. According to the eatery’s young waitresses, their reservations are full through the next two months! If you can’t wait that long to try out Pornsak’s “sexy Thai food” and spot the man himself, you may have some luck doing what I did.

On the day when I had planned to head down to Porn’s for dinner, I phoned in several times to reserve a table but no one answered. That very evening I headed down to try my luck anyway. They had just opened for dinner at 6pm, and was already full house! The waitresses apologised for not answering the phone all afternoon because reservations were already full. They penned down my name and promised to call us once a table freed up. Thankfully, it was only a half-hour wait, during which we enjoyed a nice Vietnamese drip coffee next door.

The premises are narrow, with tables spilling out into the corridor along the road. At the indoor seating area, white walls and a glass ceiling lend a clean and airy feel.


Even with a large crowd, all our orders arrive within 20 minutes.

Now, if you have come to Porn’s with the hopes of sighting Pornsak himself, you may be pleased to know that he does pop by. In fact, we spotted him behind the cash register and thanking customers!


Porn’s may be drawing in the crowd with its seductive name and star power, but it has proven that it is more than that. For a newcomer, the cooking is commendable. I will plan another visit when the furor dies down. From the looks of the crowd, that won’t be anytime soon.

Note: The 7% GST is absorbed in the food prices.

Pornsak is a Thai-Chinese who came to Singapore when he was young. Although he could not speak a word of English or Mandarin when he first arrived, the talented host is now fluent in both languages.

Look who is at Porn's yes is  Mr Baey Yam Keng, our MP for Tanjong Pagar GRC and Adviser for patronising Porn's for the 2nd time!

And also his former radio 100.3 Dj Daniel Ang 万荣. (from his blog)

Sorry if you have googled for sleazy “Porn” but ended up here. Although the previous shop space was “Massage King”, this is a actually month-old restaurant near Bugis, serving “Sexy ∙ Thai ∙ Food”.


Porn’s was packed at 9:30pm, but I was quickly led to an inner-court yard. where you might see stars above (the real ones) and within (the local celebs). I was startled by a familiar voice “万荣！好久不见！”, and saw the jumpy cheery face from 食在好源头. I should have known. Porn’s is opened by Pornsak Prajakwit!

From Radio1003 DJ, to one of MediaCorp’s most popular host, and now a young boss, this 28-year ‘boy’ is a high achiever. But his success is unsurprising. I knew Pornsak when he was still an SMU student, and his PR ∙ People ∙ EQ skills has been electrifying. He promptly jumped up the seat for a cutesy pose when I asked him to. This guy is as real as he can get.

“Porn” which means “blessings” in Thai, served up the usual Thai signatures such as Tom Yum Goong ($10.90), Green Mango Salad ($7.90), Thai Green Curry ($10.90), Tod Mun Goong Prawn Cakes ($8.50 for 3), Sticky Rice with Mango ($8.50) and Thai Iced Tea ($3.90).


The price was reasonable though I wished there were more carb dishes (surprisingly) such as beef vermicelli, kway tiao, and olive rice.

Perhaps it was a new establishment; the service was sincere but awkward. I asked if they had Pai Thai, which was such a standard Thai dish, but the waiter looked at me bewilderedly. In the end, I had a Pad Thai Hor Kai ($9.90), a version wrapped with egg.

The Pad Thai was light and not oily, nicely complimented with the condiments of chilli flakes, peanut, and sugar. It was a personal preference, and I wished there was a stronger essence of fish sauce and tamarind juice. This version was probably muted to suit the local tastes.


In a supper mood, I also ordered a Pik Gai Tai Sai ($8.50 for 3) which was fried stuffed chicken wing. It was a rarer find in Singapore, because the preparation could be rather complicated and time-consuming. The finger-licking good wings were firmly packed with marinated meat, shrimps and vermicelli, made more brilliant by the sweet chili dip.


The food quality was not ‘wow wow’ but decent. Plus, it would not be surprising to see boss Pornsak taking orders and serving you dishes. With his magnifying friendly charm, this place should be packed. And I will be back. All the best Pornsak!

We've been fortunate we've had a good crowd right from the beginning. Most people actually have no idea that I co-own this place, although they may find my face familiar when I take their orders. Yes, I take orders, serve food, mop the floor and wash the toilet!

Are any of the dishes here from your personal recipes?

No, we have a very good chef from Bangkok. She came highly recommended by a close family friend who owns A-Roy Thai Restaurant. I do give my two cents' worth 'cos I also cook - but only for friends because they won't sue me if I give them a tummy ache, ha ha!

There's a giant mural of elephants and your logo is of an elephant's butt. What's with the elephant fetish?

Because I have an adopted elephant in Chiangmai! I visited it last year while filming Going Home for Channel U. We explored different elephant ideas for the logo but decided to go with it cheekily showing its butt as it looks as if the elephant is walking into the shop. They're lucky animals so hopefully they'll bring me luck! (Points to a motorist who's knocking at our car window, trying to buy a parking coupon) It's working! You're parked outside my restaurant and you're already making a sale!

主持美食节目受欢迎，Pornsak顺理成章和好友合作开泰国餐馆。他把自己的名字拆开，以“Porn's”为招牌，“Porn”字在英文中为“色情”之意，引发路人指指点点，拍照留念。

新传媒新生代主持人Pornsak在市区开“色情”餐馆，引发路人指指点点，窃笑后把“色情”招牌拍下留念。

原来泰籍华裔Pornsak在以糖水甜品店闻名的连城街（Liang Seah Street），与好友合伙开了一家泰式餐馆。他把自己的名字拆开，以“Porn’s”为招牌，“Porn”字在英文中为“色情”之意，所以路人经过无不转头多看几眼，对它留下印象。

Pornsak笑着解释，其实“Porn”在泰文中是“祝福”之意。不过，他的餐馆名片上，却一语双关地以英文打上“性感泰食”几个字，还配上挂有尾巴的大象的屁股，让人难以不浮想联翩。

Pornsak说，名片会加上“性感”两个字，是因为以前的大学老师也是资深电视与舞台剧演员陈美英（Margaret Chan），知道他开餐馆后用英语问他：“食物还性感吗？”他才知道原来用“性感”来形容食物好吃是当下的流行用语。

他笑说，有路人看到招牌，不知道他“葫芦里卖什么药”，于是走进店里问个清楚。

为免顾客想歪，他干脆在店里一大片白墙上，写上“Porn”的泰文正解，使店面更添“泰”气。

做生意有踏实感

Pornsak的好哥儿们如李腾、张振寰、袁帅，纷纷抢在他之前开店做生意，其实他去年已蠢蠢欲动。上个月他在明星美发师李荣达帮助下找到了这个店址，便和好友符传豪毅然租下合作，后者是他进新传媒后牡谝桓鲎垡战谀俊对┘衣氛肥比鲜兜淖澹蛲对当涑珊糜选?p>　　问他为什么要做生意，他说：“我觉得在演艺圈，运气比较重要，有时时机未到，努力也不一定有成绩，而开餐馆却是看得到、吃得到、闻得到、做得到，让我感觉比较踏实。”


　　他原想在糖水街卖“入乡随俗”糖水，最后却决定要“标新立异”。Pornsak透露他投资了十万元，那是他过去三个商品代言费的总和，在五位数租金的压力下，他希望这笔投资在一年内能回本。

Pornsak选择卖泰餐，似乎是顺理成章的事。朋友听说他开餐馆，都不约而同猜中他卖什么。他笑说，之前上过烹饪比赛节目《三菜一汤》三次，前两次都输给对手，但自认尽管手艺不好，却很会吃，加上他从小吃泰国菜长大，所以能够告诉厨师以什么滋味为标准。

员工难找，找何爱玲帮忙

新店开了两星期，午餐和晚餐时间几乎座无虚席。他受访时，有人从后门送货进来，Pornsak不禁笑说：“从后门进来的都是要钱的，每次他们都心惊胆跳！”

问他做老板的感觉如何，他说，员工人手不足，他是掌柜也是店小二。餐馆开张前的一些装潢他都参与，甚至家具的设计，他也负责敲敲打打。

他感叹开店至今，最困难的是请人，原来餐饮业的员工太难找了。目前店里的两名侍应生，其中一名不久要考中四会考，为了留住她，Pornsak还承诺有空会替她补习。

就连点心部门也缺人手，Pornsak于是找来曾在综艺节目合作、有烹饪经验的第一届“爆笑新人王”冠军何爱玲帮忙。

“泰”有风味到底新店有什么值得一试的菜肴呢？

正副业离不开美食

Pornsak之前拍摄的《食在好源头》大受观众欢迎，收视率全台第一，监制陈文聪特地剪下本报报道，到他的店里当着许多顾客面前，祝贺他开店大喜，还宣布稍后就要开拍第二系列，让他既开心又骄傲。

他说，有人经过他的店，问他：“你的店是《食在好源头》的延伸吗？”可见节目深入民心。

他说：“希望新系列原班人马再合作，主持人可别换人啊！”

除了《敢瘦健康2》，他目前正录制由澳大利亚电视台制作的双语综艺节目《妙厨家族大比赛》，并将投入《煮炒来了2》的主持，看来，无论是正业和副业，他都和美食脱离不了关系了！

本地主持Pornsak抛6位数在连城街（Liang Seah Street）低调开泰国餐馆，连老爸都不知道！餐馆招牌以大象屁股作为招徕，逗趣搞怪，餐馆名字“Porn’s”则是Pornsak的缩写，玩转情色，吸引眼球，Pornsak自嘲说，自恋的他平时爱上网搜寻自己的名字和新闻，结果常常误闯色情网站！

他笑说：“我的店，迟早也要变成R21，哈哈。因为大家上网查询我的餐馆，头几页都是色情网站咯！不过，Porn这个字在泰语中有‘福气’、‘好运’的意思，所以大家不要想歪了，哈哈。”招牌从Pornsak清迈助养的大象身上得到灵感，餐馆颜色也算过八字，以蓝、白、黑为主，走宽敞明亮路线。

Pornsak笑说，这次和朋友合股开餐馆，耗尽半生积蓄。他从16、7岁开始教补习存钱，真正开始“积财”是在电台1003当DJ时，后来到新传媒当主持，3支广告收入进袋，让他终于可以圆梦。Pornsak说，因为不想让身在泰国的老爸担心，因此对方至今仍不知道儿子开店当老板。

Pornsak’s restaurant

After finding out about Pornsak’s newly set up restaurant (28 Liang Seah Street) in i-Weekly, I rounded up some colleagues and headed straight for his new blend of sexy thai food…

Located just diagonally opposite Crystal Jade, it was easy to spot the cutesy Porn’s logo of an elephant sticking its butt out… This logo is very Pornsak – animated, friendly and cheerful.

At lunchtime, it was crowded but Pornsak managed to find us a table for four at the courtyard inside. We sat just directly next to the aircon so it was ok for me (though not for my colleagues who hated the sun) despite the mid-day sunlight streaming through the open top glass ceiling…it must be real romantic to eat your Thai dinner with stars hovering above you…

This afternoon, the customers were mainly working class adults and students (some obviously there to gaze at Pornsak and his handsome business partner Tuan How – also an ex-MediaCorp Producer). ‘The Ultimate Comedian’ Ms Mole, appointed Restaurant Manager was busy helping out the Thai Chef in the kitchen…

Looking at the wide range of food on the menu, we decided to leave the ordering to Pornsak (who also suggested we try the drink named Nam Gap Jeap at $3.90/-)…

The rest of the food arrived shortly…even though it was a crowded afternoon with a happy but busy Pornsak serving customers from one table to another…

Porn’s signature dish on the menu is – Tom Yum Pot ($12.90/- a pot for sharing). We opted for seafood mix and we weren’t disappointed. The tom yum soup we had was really good – 够酸但不会辣到你要猛灌冰水.

We also had Rice Cracker ($6.50/-) with a meat dip and Green Mango Salad (a wonderful $7.90/- dish with fried 鳕鱼丝 sprinkled on top and it was so good I forgot to shoot a photograph)… Personally find the Green Curry Chicken $10.90/- a bit too sweet (but the other 3 colleagues of mine loved it)…

Stuffed chicken wings (light crispy skin and tasty fillings)…

…and equally crispy prawn cakes $8.50/- (unlike most typical tangy prawn cakes as this is more of a minced prawn filling cake)…

We also had Kangkong ($6.50/- and that was not my fav but my colleagues loved it fried with beans).

A meal is never a meal without dessert so we ordered Sticky Rice Mango ($8.50) and Red Ruby ($5.50/-) to share. We were extremely happy with the Sticky Rice Mango but not impressed with the Red Ruby (only if you like the taste of Rose Syrup added). Limited choices of dessert on the menu for now (more coming in future).

Porn’s was set up just 2 weeks ago and no official opening ceremony yet…it’s still uber-clean and a nice cosy place to hang out. The credit card facility is not in operation yet so we paid by Nets (you can also pay by cash). There are also many solo set lunch items on the menu so you are ok coming here alone or just with a colleague or friend who doesn’t fancy sharing food with you. My verdict for Porn’s:

Pornsak’s Service & Cheerfulness: Priceless

Ambience: !!!!! (Courtyard) !!! (Hall)

Food: !!!! (5 !!!!! for it’s signature’s dish – Tom Yum Pot)

Affordabilty: !!!! (Thai food with ambience + hip city location + fairly extensive menu)

Recommended: For working adults, friends’ gatherings and couples out for a romantic dinner in the courtyard
